mouse & rat embryo cryopreservation

Mouse Embryos - All embryos collected are graded for quality and only the best 2-cell embryos are frozen

We know that a "one size fits all" approach to cryopreservation is not an effective way to successfully archive your valuable genetically engineered strains. At Charles River, we take into account the unique genetic, phenotypic, and reproductive characteristics of each line and help you determine which cryopreservation option is best for you. Generally, lines with multiple mutations, reproductive difficulties, or unique genetic backgrounds are more effectively backed up via embryo cryopreservation.

Our mouse and rat embryo cryopreservation packages are designed to provide an effective backup for all common strains.  Each package includes the cryopreservation of approximately 250 embryos utilizing either your colony females or commercially available wildtype females as embryo donors.  Our colony specialists will work with you to determine what package will meet your needs and budget.

To ensure quality and future viability of your cryopreserved stock, an in vitro quality control process is performed on each batch of embryos that is frozen. We require at least an 80% post-thaw viability, with most strains at greater than 95%. Because of this rigorous quality control effort, we guarantee to be able to recover any line that we cryopreserve, giving you peace of mind that your backup will be there when you need it. With over two decades of experience performing mouse and rat cryopreservation, you can have confidence that your colonies are protected.
