Mission at Work: Tim Wiley

Wiley FamilyMy role as a Research Technician as well as the role of biomedical research took on a whole new meaning for my family in 2006.

When my son Jacob was four years old, he went to see a doctor for what was meant to be just a routine examination of a mole on his waist. The mole was sent for extensive testing and to our surprise, the results revealed some unsettling news. Jacob’s mole was Melanoma. The removal of some of his lymph nodes confirmed the diagnosis. This form of cancer is extremely rare in small children and as a result, Jacob followed an adult’s course of treatment which included chemotherapy.

Although as a family we were faced with many difficult days throughout Jacob’s diagnosis and treatment, we found comfort in the fact that the research we do at Charles River makes a difference in the lives of individuals, including our own family members. The support and knowledgeable resources provided by Charles River were truly amazing.

Jacob is now in remission and enjoying everyday life thanks to the important mission we all contribute to at Charles River, day in and day out!
