Humane Care Initiative

The goal of the Charles River Humane Care Initiative is to ensure that Charles River continues as a worldwide leader in the humane care of laboratory animals. Laboratory animals are an important resource that furthers our knowledge of living systems and contributes to the discovery of life-saving drugs and procedures. We work hand-in-hand with the scientific community to understand how living conditions, handling procedures and stress play an important role in the quality and efficiency of research. As animal caregivers and researchers, we are responsible to our clients and the public for the health and well-being of the animals in our care.

The Humane Care Initiative is directed by our Animal Welfare and Training group, which consists of professionals committed to animal welfare and trained in laboratory animal medicine and science, training and ethics.

The Charles River CHARTER (Commitment to Humane Animal Research Through Excellence and Responsibility) program is committed to funding organizations and projects that support the objectives of the Humane Care Initiative. Our mission is:

  • To fund organizations and projects whose principal goal is to educate the public about biomedical research.
  • To enhance education that furthers the humane care of laboratory animals and advance the values of the 3Rs (Reduction, Refinement, and Replacement). This includes, but is not limited to, research, development and testing related to best practices and fostering the health and quality of laboratory animals.
  • To support activities that increase the awareness of the ethics of humane animal care and foster alliances between organizations with similar goals.
