New Research Animal Health Surveillance Assays Now Available
Feb 11 2013
We are pleased to announce that several new health surveillance assays have been added to our 2013 Research Models and Services catalog. Our Research & Development (R&D) team researches emerging diseases, develops novel assays and continually refines methods. In recent years, our serology R&D team has produced more than 185 MFIA® tests to detect antibodies to 90 infectious agents in seven different host species. In addition, our PCR R&D group has developed more than 160 TaqMan® assays to screen over 10 host species.
The following infectious agent assays are new to our 2013 catalog and augment your colony quality control program:
New Rodent and Rabbit Assays
Additional Helicobacter PCR Speciation
Although Helicobacter bilis and H. hepaticus are the most pathogenic, other species can contribute as co-factors to disease in susceptible hosts. Therefore, we have developed assays for more species in response to client requests and because tracking individual species can help in determining the success of control measures or alert to new contaminations. In addition to PCR assays for Helicobacter genus, H. hepaticus and H. bilis, Charles River now provides speciation assays for H. ganmani, H. mastomirinus, H. rodentium, H. trogontum (rat only), and H. typhlonius. To learn more, view the Helicobacter infectious agent technical sheet.
Helicobacter PCR is included in every mouse or rat PRIA panel and is available as an individual test or as an add-on to any health monitoring (HM) protocol. Feces is the primary sample type; up to 10 individual fecal pellets can be pooled and submitted as one sample with one result reported.
Lactate Dehydrogenase Elevating Virus (LDV) MFIA® Serology
Infection of mice with LDV may significantly alter the function of a number of body systems without clinical signs. LDV is primarily transmitted in the laboratory setting through infected tumors, cell lines and other mouse-derived biologic materials. To learn more, view the LDV infectious agent technical sheet.
LDV MFIA® test is included in the Mouse Assessment Plus profile and can be added to any mouse serology profile; at least 200μL of serum diluted 1 part serum into 4 parts phosphate buffered saline (PBS) must be frozen and submitted for testing. Additionally, LDV is included in all rodent infectious agent PCR panels for cell line/research biologics screening.
Pasteurella multocida PCR
Of laboratory animals, rabbits are the most severely clinically affected by P. multocida. Since P. multocida infection has the potential to interfere with a wide variety of research, carriers are generally undesirable for use in research, plus infected rabbits may become clinically ill, rendering them unfit for use. To learn more, view the P. multocida infectious agent sheet.
P. multocida PCR is available as an individual test, as an add-on to any rabbit health monitoring (HM) protocol. Nasal aspirate is the primary sample type.
Rabbit Pinworm (Passalurus ambiguus) PCR
Pinworms are common in wild and pet animals, but have varying prevalence in laboratory animals. Pinworm infection may have subtle effects, generally altering the nature of immune responses. To learn more, view the pinworm infectious agent technical sheet.
Rabbit pinworm PCR is available as an individual test and as an add-on to any rabbit health monitoring (HM) protocol. Both fecal pellet and anal swab are necessary for accurate assessment; up to 10 individual rabbit fecal pellets and 10 individual anal swabs can be pooled and submitted as one sample with one result reported.

New NHP Assays
Samples can be submitted to Charles River to screen for Trypanosoma cruzi [Chagas disease (CHA)] via MFIA® serology and PCR. For your in-house testing needs, simian ELISA plates and supplemental reagents are now offered for simian type D retrovirus (SRV), simian T-lymphotropic virus (STLV), measles virus (MV) and Herpes B virus (HBV/B-virus). New for simian IFA slides and supplemental reagents, macaque rhadinovirus-1 (MRV) is now available.
