Activities involving animals at Charles River Laboratories comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Among the most prominent are:

• Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals - Institute of Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR)
• Interagency Regulatory Animal Care (IRAC) Guiding Principles
• Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) Principles of Research Animal Use.

Ethical Review Committees (ERC), called Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees in the United States, play a critical role in assuring animal welfare. To foster best practices, our ERCs meet on a regular basis to harmonize practices and policies and share information.

Members of the Animal Welfare and Training Group visit our sites to perform animal welfare audits and provide training to increase awareness of the importance of animal welfare.
