Adventures in vivo
Drug Discovery & Development – March 2, 2009
Imaging continues to be a burgeoning tool of the pharmaceutical industry. Tools such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), which were at one time only used to image humans for medical purposes, have made their way into pharmaceutical labs. Optical imaging (i.e., microscopy) has also become a major tool of the industry, especially with advancements in labeling and detection technologies. Imaging of animal models to the assay efficacy and safety of candidate pharaceuticals has become commonplace. Moreover, growth and development of in vivo imaging technologies, which allow the user to capture biological events in real time in live animals, does not show signs of waning...Read the full article.
