Integrated Approach to Ocular Pathology Supporting Device and Drug Development Offered by Charles River

October 22, 2009 – The topic of ocular disease is frequently discussed in a variety of healthcare forums. As our population ages and gains weight, the incidence of ocular disease will continue to rise, as will the need to combat these conditions. Fortunately, drug development in the field of ocular diseases has experienced something tantamount to a revolution, particularly with regard to angiogenesis modalities and antiangiogenic treatments for back-of-the-eye neovascular pathologies.

Our team of pathologists at Charles River Pathology Associates has extensive experience in ocular pathology and medical devices. Charles River Pathology Associates offers a variety of ocular processing options beyond the standard paraffin sections, having a dedicated plastics lab producing GMA sections, MMA ground sections and MMA thin sections. This allows the in situ sectioning of all types of implanted devices, whether plastic, polymer, metal or other biomaterial.

We have experience in the use of an extensive array of histochemical and immunohistochemical staining techniques and also offer electron microscopy where appropriate. In-house, we have extensive morphometry expertise with particular applications in the analysis of corneal collagen density, specular microscopy images and blood vessel density. Specialized applications can be developed to meet specific requirements.

The combination of our ocular pathology expertise with that of our Preclinical, Clinical and Research Models and Services groups enables us to offer an integrated approach to ophthalmology research. Compounds or implantable devices intended for ocular treatment can be assessed for efficacy, safety and toxicity. Ocular effects of compounds targeted to nonocular conditions can also be characterized.

Charles River has the necessary understanding of eye-related diseases and conditions, as well as the technical ability and experience to guide your new drugs and treatments through the development process as efficiently as possible.
