Carrageenan Footpad Edema (CFE) Model
|
Carrageenan Footpad Edema (CFE) is a classic model of acute inflammation. It is a general model for the assessment of overall inflammation and it can also be used as a method to assess acute inflammatory pain. This model provides rapid assessment of a compound’s ability to provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. Agents that show activity in this assay include NSAIDs, glucocorticoids, and coxibs (modest).
Animals are treated with compound prior to challenge with λ-carrageenan in one hind footpad. The contralateral footpad is injected with saline. Footpad thickness is measured at specified time points. Determination of tissue and/or serum cytokine levels and histologic analysis can also be performed.
