ob/ob model 

The ob/ob mouse is a monogenic model of obesity induced diabetes.  ob/ob mice are deficient in the hormone leptin.  This protein is expressed predominantly in adipose tissue of normal mice.  Leptin plays a major role in regulating body energy efficiency and satiety.  While leptin deficiency in humans is exceedingly rare, ob/ob mice exhibit many of the metabolic abnormalities of diabetes.  This includes insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, non-fasting hyperglycemia, impaired glucose tolerance, and adipose tissue abnormalities.
