serology services

We know that you need regular updates on colony health. Serology is a simple and effective way to determine if animal health has been compromised, and often supplements comprehensive health monitoring. We offer a range of serology profiles for multiple species, allowing you to choose the best testing level for your facility. Species tested include: mouse, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, and others.

For the majority of species tested, our principal serologic testing method is the Multiplexed Fluorometric ImmunoAssay™ (MFIA™). The MFIA™ is highly sensitive and easily automated, allowing us to perform your assays efficiently while providing consistency from one submission to the next. The flexible multiplex format allows us to incorporate several assays for a single agent, providing more specific results. Multiple controls are employed in every MFIA™ assay to ensure accuracy and reliability and provide an extra level of safeguarding. The species IgG is a system suitability control that determines if the MFIA™ assay is working properly (e.g., all correct reagents have been added to the test well). The anti-species IgG is a sample suitability control used to verify that sufficient sample has been added to the MFIA™ well.

Confirmatory testing is provided at no charge for samples that have inconclusive or unexpected results using alternative techniques, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test, western blot (WIB), and, upon request, hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) assay. To simplify the design of your testing program, we have agents conveniently organized into Profiles. Individual agent screening is also available. Serology reagents are also available to purchase for your in-house laboratory.

We provide IATA-compliant sample collection and shipping materials (sample collection vials/swabs, shipping labels and containers, etc.) free of charge to all Charles River customers.
