Charles River offers evaluation of test agents in models of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is typically modeled in streptozotocin-treated rats or mice. This test system is well-suited for the evaluation of agents such as insulin mimetics, treatments or devices designed to replace or repair pancreatic function, or as a model for the study of the microvascular complications of type 1 diabetes.
There are several genetic models of type 2 diabetes, including the Zucker Diabetic Fatty (obese) and Goto-Kakizaki (nonobese) rat, along with the obese db/db, ob/ob and THE POUND MOUSE™. Effects of test agents on blood glucose and insulin levels, along with glucose or insulin tolerance tests and assessment of plasma biomarkers (glucagon, insulin and leptin), comprise standard endpoints.

||The ob/ob mouse is a monogenetic model of obesity induced diabetes.|
||The metabolic abnormalities demonstrated by the db/db mouse are due to a defect in leptin signaling resulting from a point mutation in the gene for the leptin receptor.|
In ZDF rats, a defect in the leptin receptor is responsible for the diabetic phenotype exhibited by these animals.
