Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) Facts and Figures (page 2) As the Endosafe scientists have refined their technology over the years, the amount of raw material needed to perform an LAL test has steadily declined. One of our most popular assays sold today, the kinetic chromogenic assay (KCA), uses 50% of the raw material used in a conventional gel-clot test. The new Endosafe ® -PTS uses less than 5% of the raw material of a gel-clot test. Company founder, James F. Cooper, Ph.D., initiated a dialogue with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources that has resulted in a regulatory environment that assures the preservation of the indigenous crab population. Since 1992, the use of the horseshoe crab for whelk, conch, and eel bait has not been permitted in the state of South Carolina. Unlike other states where the crab population was being severely reduced until bait quotas were established in 1998, South Carolina's population has remained stable. |
