Dried Blood Spot Sampling and Analysis Now Available at Charles River

January 12, 2010 – We are pleased to announce that procedures for sampling and analysis using dry blood spot (DBS) technology will be available across all full-service sites in the United Kingdom, North America and China. After a successful period of testing at our Edinburgh (UK) laboratories, the techniques used for the bioanalysis of DBS samples have been successfully established and are now available at all Charles River preclinical sites worldwide.

DBS does not require satellite toxicokinetic (TK) groups, which allows for TK data to be directly correlated to pathology findings and, in accordance with the 3R initiative (replacement, reduction and refinement), helps reduce animal usage. DBS also results in efficiencies – not only through reduced animal usage, but also through lower sample shipping costs and reduced stability testing.

Since pharmacokinetic (PK)/TK data can be obtained from whole blood and DBS samples are generally more inert than frozen samples, sample stability is improved. Neither plasma/serum samples nor frozen sample storage are required, so sample shipments can be made at ambient temperatures via conventional couriers.

As announced at the 2009 European Bioanalytical Forum (EBF), Charles River is the leader in pioneering dried plasma sampling (DPS) benefitting existing plasma/serum programs through the logistical advantages of shipping dry cards.
