SPF Chicken Flock Monitoring with MFIA® Technology

September 9, 2011 - Specific pathogen-free (SPF) chicken flocks must be continuously monitored to ensure that they are compliant with regulatory requirements. For greater sensitivity in detecting antibodies for select avian pathogens, Charles River Avian Vaccine Services now monitors SPF chicken flocks using Multiplexed Fluorometric ImmunoAssay® (MFIA®) technology. Our Research Animal Diagnostic Services group implemented this same platform over five years ago as the primary method for screening serum samples from multiple species for infectious agents.

For 50 years, Charles River Avian Vaccine Services has been providing SPF eggs for vaccine manufacturing and research, and we continue to lead the industry in quality and SPF technology. With these changes in technology, our SPF flock testing continues to meet or exceed USDA VS memorandum 800.65 and European Pharmacopeia 5.2.2.

While we currently utilize this technology to monitor our own flocks, we also offer this service to customers testing their own SPF or research flock samples. Our two MFIA bead panels use Luminex® Corporation’s xMAP® technology for the serosurveillance of 12 or 22 avian viruses. Should you test your own SPF or research flocks with MFIA technology in-house, we also provide individual components for MFIA testing via our two poultry panels and/or custom-made panels.
