In Vitro CNS Models | Charles River Discovery Services

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Primary cultures offer fast access to study molecules of interest directly in relevant cell types. Primary cultures are real cells present in tissue instead of immortalized cell lines, and are good tools for lead molecule identification (efficacy and toxicity screening). Data is available within few weeks from study initiation.

In vitro Model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

  • Kainic acid exposure in spinal cord culture

In ALS, spinal cord motoneurons and cortical neurons are severely affected by the disease. The effect on these target cells can be studied using spinal cord cultures or cortical cultures using slowly-progressing excitotoxic exposure with kainic acid targeting a special subtype of glutamatergic receptors.
