Primary cultures offer fast access to study molecules of interest directly in relevant cell types. Primary cultures are real cells present in tissue instead of immortalized cell lines, and are good tools for lead molecule identification (efficacy and toxicity screening). Data is available within few weeks from study initiation.
Model for Neurodegeneration
- Client compounds and BDNF in cortical/hippocampal cultures
Ability to promote growth of neurites (Neurite outgrowth, NOG) is an important feature for compounds studied for CNS degenerative diseases (e.g., stroke, Alzheimer’s disease). Primary cortical and hippocampal cultures outgrow actively and the effect of compounds on a number of processes and branches as well as on the length of neurites can be studied.
