Charles River has extensive experience conducting inhalation toxicology studies for the pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology industries. Since the implementation of GLPs in 1978, studies ranging from acute to carcinogenicity have been performed utilizing a variety of species for materials of different forms, such as powder, liquid, metered dose inhaler, and vapor.
Our scientific and technical staff has a strong knowledge base in testing program design. Our experience includes the selection of drug formulation and delivery systems, the estimation of dosage in animal studies, new therapeutic areas, and special studies to demonstrate efficacy or pharmacotoxicity. With the largest inhalation toxicology facilities in the world, we have incorporated rodent inhalation dosing rooms with adjacent husbandry space, as well as constructed a dedicated section for non-rodent studies. Each dosing suite is equipped with customized generation and exposure systems for delivery of test atmospheres.
We have additional expertise in micronizing and blending powder formulations and characterizing a wide range of inhaled compounds, including liquids, powders, vapors, and gases.
Study Types
- Nose-only, oronasal, and head-only
- Acute to chronic toxicity, plus carcinogenicity
- Neonatal inhalation
- Reproductive inhalation
- Intratracheal
- Intranasal
- Anti-asthmatic efficacy
- Immunologic sensitization via inhalation
- Radiolabelled aerosol studies
