NOMENCLATURE Crl:ZUC(Orl)-Leprfa
ORIGIN The spontaneous mutation “obese” (Fatty) was found in the 13 M rat stock of Sherman and Merck, by Doctor Lois Zucker, Harriet Bird Memorial Laboratory, Stow, Massachusetts 01775, USA, in 1961. (Zucker, LM and Zucker, TF (1961), J. Hered., 52, 275). The strain was introduced in Orléans at CSEAL, France in 1970; then transferred to Charles River Laboratories France in 1991.

The obese of fatty condition appeared in the 13M strain maintained at the Laboratory of Comparative Pathology of Theodore and Lewis Zucker in Stow, MA, USA. Research colonies were established at many institutions from this nucleus colony. To Charles River USA in 1985 from a research colony maintained at a pharmaceutical colony.
COAT COLOR
Four principal coat color variants: 1 – predominantly brown, 2 – brown and white dilute, 3 – predominantly black, 4 – black and white.
