speed congenics (MAX-BAX®)

We know that having animals on a defined genetic background is important for your research but the time it takes to fully backcross a novel model can be prohibitive. To help you further your research more quickly, we offer an advanced speed congenics program called MAX-BAX®. MAX-BAX® (Marker-Assisted Accelerated Backcrossing) can facilitate the rapid production of congenic strains of knockout or transgenic animals through the use of microsatellite analysis. This pioneering process selects individuals with preferred genetic backgrounds and greatly reduces the number of generations needed to produce a congenic research model. Backcrossing guided by our microsatellite analysis data achieves 99.9% congenicity in approximately five generations, potentially saving you up to 1.5 years of breeding time (five generations) over conventional backcrossing. We offer approximately two dozen panels of 96-110 microsatellite markers for a variety of the most popular inbred strain comparisons, and can develop new panels on demand at no charge.

The MAX-BAX® program is available to you either as a standalone service or in conjunction with our in-house breeding services. When performed as a standalone service, you submit a small tissue sample (typically ear or tail) or purified DNA to our facility, we perform the microsatellite analysis, and return the data to you with recommendations on which animals to breed in the next generation. We recommend reading our breeding guidelines for more information. When performed in conjunction with our breeding services, each client is assigned a dedicated project manager who will direct all aspects of the breeding and genotyping. As a fully managed program, all you need to do is submit animals for MAX-BAX® and we will return fully congenic animals in approximately 15 months.
