Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) enables real-time in vivo imaging of several gamma radioactive compounds. Various commercial ligands offer a straightforward method to follow pathological changes over time or competitive binding of potential drugs.
SPECT/CT has also emerged as a means of correlating anatomical information from CT with functional information from SPECT. ADME studies with SPECT/CT and gamma counting methods provide fast results.
b-CIT imaging with SPECT/CT can be used to study the dopaminergic system. It can also be used to analyze the condition of the striatum and to study the competitive binding affinity for presynaptic dopamine transporters (DAT) in the brains of mammals.
