Primary cultures offer fast access to study molecules of interest directly in relevant cell types. Primary cultures are real cells present in tissue instead of immortalized cell lines and are good tools for lead molecule identification (efficacy and toxicity screening).
Charles River conducts contract studies in an established in vitro model of Alzheimer’s disease to assess the efficacy of novel compounds. In Alzheimer’s disease, the cortex and hippocampus are the most affected brain areas that are seriously damaged by amyloid beta (Aβ). These target cells can be cultured and exposed to the toxic form, Aβ1-42. Cell death is determined by LDH release and immunocytochemical evaluation of viable cells. Data is available within few weeks from study initiation.
