Primary cultures offer fast access to study molecules of interest directly in relevant cell types. Primary cultures are real cells present in tissue instead of immortalized cell lines and are good tools for lead molecule identification (efficacy and toxicity screening).
Charles River conducts contract studies in an established in vitro model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to assess the efficacy of novel compounds. In ALS, spinal cord motor neurons and cortical neurons are severely affected. The effect on these target cells are studied in spinal cord cultures or cortical cultures using slowly-progressing excitotoxic exposure with kainic acid targeting a special subtype of glutamatergic receptors. Data is available within few weeks from study initiation.
