The Atlantic horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is an ancient mariner with a lineage that goes back 440 million years. Because of its valuable contribution to biomedical research and applications, it remains a protected species, and today the population of nature’s most important blood donor continues to flourish and grow.
