Bacterial ID Using a Phylogenetic Analysis Based on the 16S rRNA Gene - What Have We Learned?


Bacterial identification as part of environmental monitoring (EM) programs is critical to understanding the microbial ecology in a manufacturing facility. The EM program enables companies to quickly identify organisms that are transient or resident in their facilities before these organisms have an opportunity to contaminate a product. The EM program is only effective if the organisms recovered from the facility are accurately identified, so the information gathered can be used to understand the microbial control through tracking and trending and dictate appropriate remediation activities. The use of 16S rRNA gene sequences has been considered the most powerful and accurate tool for bacterial identification. This webinar reviews the science and history of utilizing the rDNA sequences for bacterial identification. Particular focus is put on the advantages and disadvantages of using the first 500 base pairs of the 16S rRNA gene versus its full length sequence and/or other more variable gene targets.
