Nicotinic receptors constitute a family of ligand-gated ion channels permeable to Na+, K+ and Ca2+. They are composed of various permutations of 10 different alpha subunits and four different beta subunits. The predominant forms of nicotinic receptor in brain are α4/β2 and α7. The α3/β4 form is a neuronal form that is insensitive to α-bungarotoxin.
