The human GRIA1 and GRIA4 genes encode heteromeric GluA1/GluA4, which belongs in the AMPA receptor subclass of glutamate receptors. Heteromeric AMPA receptors mediate the majority of fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the mammalian CNS, and are considered as potentially important therapeutic targets for seizure, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and neuropathic pain. Functional variation in AMPA receptors is generated by alternative splicing and RNA editing.
