The melanocortin 1 receptor is one of the key proteins in regulating hair and skin color. A member of the family of G-protein-coupled receptors, it functions at the surface of pigment producing cells (called melanocytes). After activation by MSH, the MC1 receptor is coupled to Gs signal pathway and is involved in many physical and pathological processes including skin pigmentation, autoimmune disease, inflammation and melanoma.
