The rat TRPV1 gene encodes the pore-forming subunit of TRPV1 (transient receptor potential channel, vanilloid subtype 1), a non-selective, calcium-permeable cation channel. TRPV1 channels, activated by noxious stimuli such as capsaicin, acidity, and heat, mediate sensory input in peripheral nociceptors.
