At Charles River, we are passionate about our role in improving the quality of people’s lives. Our mission, our excellent science and our strong sense of purpose guide us in all that we do, and we approach each day with the knowledge that our work helps to improve the health and well-being of many across the globe.

The drug research and development process is highly complex, yet essential for delivering safe and effective therapies to patients. Even though the process is well defined, drug development programs are fundamentally different for each product.

To help our clients navigate this process, we offer a wide range of products and services that span the entire drug discovery and development continuum and can be tailored to specific research conditions.

Charles River offers you the flexibility of outsourcing any part of your pathology requirements. Our laboratories are overseen by ACVP board-certified veterinary pathologists and offer custom protocol design and rapid report turnaround. Our services range from routine diagnostic assessment to pathology support as part of your in-house research studies.

Charles River has more personnel, equipment and space dedicated to pathology than any other contract research organization or preclinical product development company in North America. Our team of board-certified pathologists, combined with our multidisciplinary expertise, state-of-the-art technology and depth of experience with large and small molecules and devices, enables us to offer a wide array of integrated anatomic and clinical pathology services with the flexibility and timeliness our clients need.

Our facility in Wilmington, MA specializes in non-GxP pathologic processing and assessment of rodent and NHP samples, including tissue trimming, cassetting, processing, embedding, cutting and staining of FFPE tissues, and assessment and report writing from boarded pathologists.

Our labs in Frederick, MD; Durham, NC; and Chicago, IL can handle other species, large-scale projects, GxP work and specialty pathology services such as IHC, in situ hybridization, EM, TCR studies, and medical device work.

Charles River's pathology labs are not CLIA certified.

Charles River works with global customers on unique transgenic models to deliver study-ready cohorts to meet research needs. Our dedicated project management team, scientists, and animal care staff are always available to offer guidance, develop work plans, and help overcome any challenges. Through partnerships with genomics industry leaders, our combined expertise provides an optimum environment for generating, characterizing, preserving, and distributing your transgenic lines.

•   CRISPR Mice and Rats – We offer CRISPR* mice and rats using genetic transfer into embryos or embryonic stem cells based on the needs of your project. Depending on allele complexity, we can obtain transgenic mice in three to four months.*CRISPR/CAS9 used under licenses to granted and pending US and international patents from The Broad Institute and ERS Genomics Limited.

•   RNAi Mouse Models – We offer potent, inducible, and reversible RNAi-mediated gene silencing for your gene of interest in mouse models. Our state-of-the-art microinjection services transform custom ES cells into your in vivo research model in about 12 weeks.

•   ES Cell Mutagenesis in Mice – With ES cell technology, our microinjection experts inject custom ES cells directly into blastocysts, effectively bringing your in vitro research models to life.

•   Knockin Mice and Knockout Mice – With our industry partners, all types of mutations are achievable in knockout and knockout mice. Create knockin and knockout mice to further your study and aid in drug development.

•   Microinjection Services – Bridge the gap between your in vitro and in vivo mouse models by using ES cell, DNA, and CRISPR microinjections.

•   Transgenic Mice – With DNA transgenesis technology, our microinjection experts inject the DNA vector designed and prepared by your lab or our industry partners directly into the pronuclei of zygotes, effectively bringing your transgenic mouse models to life with founders available in as few as three to four months.
