Do Age and Sex Affect Immunotherapy Response?

Typically, female patients display higher antibody response to influenza vaccines and even to tumor cells. When it comes to cancer immunotherapy, however, this higher immune efficiency may be a hindrance.

The co-author on a recent study on this topic, Maurizio Zanetti, spoke with Healio about their findings. He said that a more robust early response to immune attacks could be responsible for decreased response to immunotherapy treatments.

"This is primarily because cancer is a chronic disease," he said. "It’s a long battle, and the battle is always in favor the tumor."
