Flu Season Is Off to an Early (and Weird) Start

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released preliminary flu data for 2019, and the results are unusual. 27 states are already reporting high to moderate flu activity, compared with only five last year at this time. Also, the majority of current cases are caused by influenza B, when this strain usually closes flu season. CDC officials recommend that everyone over 6 months old gets the flu shot.

Loneliness May Be Due to Increasing Aging Population

The American Psychological Association (APA) released a report on a couple of studies on loneliness. One study found no evidence that older adults were experiencing more loneliness than previous generations but did find that the problem is compounded by a growing population of older people as the baby boomer generation ages. The studies recorded factors such as education level, overall health, and feelings of control to determine trends in loneliness as we age.

Top questions asked of Google in 2019 include what is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), what is the keto diet, and how do you get rid of hiccups. The number one health related question from this year? “How to lower blood pressure.”
