Researching Vaccines and Blood Clots
COVID vaccines and their potential side effects
In very rare cases, patients have developed blood clots after receiving some of the approved COVID vaccines. While the instances are rare enough (for one vaccine) for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to continue to encourage vaccine deployment, any serious side effect warrants full scrutiny.
Haematologists and EMA researchers have been working on finding the cause of blood clotting disorders in patients. They plan to collect data on potential high risk groups and connection with any preexisting conditions as well as simultaneously running laboratory experiments to pinpoint the potential cause of the clotting disorders. Along the way, they are preparing to learn more about the connection between the immune system and blood coagulation, which could inform the design of vaccines in the future.
