Turning a Laser into a Powerful Advantage

Just like valiant fighters battling to save the day "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." our brave embryologists are well trained on using lasers. The state-of-the-art reproductive technologies utilised in our new European microinjection platform include highly precise laser-assisted in vitro fertilization (IVF) to help save your precious transgenic lines.

IVF is a potent tool to facilitate rederivation, colony expansion, strain recovery and rescue, cryopreservation and distribution of transgenic lines. However, standard IVF usually achieves poor results in the case of male factor infertility or sub-fertility caused by genetic modifications or poor quality frozen stock. Laser-assisted IVF facilitates fertilization by allowing easier penetration of spermatozoa through a perforation made by an infrared laser in the zona pellucida, the protective protein barrier of the oocyte. This procedure increases the fertilization rate four to ten times that of standard IVF.

“Last year we needed to have several lines, which were no longer on the shelf at our facility, rederived by IVF from frozen sperm. The sperm that we had turned out to be of low viability and failed in a conventional IVF procedure so Jean [Cozzi] and his team applied laser-assisted IVF to the material to rescue the lines. This worked nicely for all lines and recovery of fertilised embryos was successful. One line was problematic; mice were recovered, but we were a little unlucky with transmission of the transgenic allele. However, backup embryos were produced and frozen at the time, and so these are now being implanted. Overall, I am very happy with the whole experience; Jean is always responsive, helpful and a pleasure to work with, and his team provides a good service. I would happily recommend them to others.”
