The sequencing technique is independent of the health or growth conditions of the isolate and samples can be viable or nonviable cultures, or simply genomic DNA from your microbe. The resulting DNA sequence of each sample submitted for identification is compared to the validated Accugenix® library — the industry’s most comprehensive and up-to-date database for environmental isolates.

  • Fungal Identification with AccuGENX-ID® FunITS

    Accurate identification of fungal isolates is critical to environmental monitoring programs. Genotypic methods, such as comparative sequencing of the ribosomal DNA ITS2 region in fungi, have been proven to be the most accurate and reproducible methods for identifying unknown organisms. The technology is inherently stable, which allows for reproducible data for identification.

    The identification of fungi, especially filamentous fungi, has historically been a very difficult task. Due to the amount of experience and time required to accurately identify filamentous fungi to the species level, it has been common practice to either identify these organisms to the genus level, or in some cases, simply identify them as “molds.”

    Genetic approaches to fungal identification provide a more reliable and rapid method for identification to the species level. FunITS uses the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS2) region, a commonly sequenced fungal DNA region that is widely accepted as the "gold standard" by fungal taxonomists. Because the ITS region has a higher degree of variation between closely related species than other DNA regions such as D2, "ITS" arguably the best available method for identifying fungal species.

  • Bacterial Identification with AccuGENX-ID® BacSeq

    Accurate identification of bacterial isolates is critical to environmental monitoring programs. Genotypic methods, such as comparative sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene in bacteria, have been proven to be the most accurate and reproducible methods for identifying unknown organisms. The technology is inherently stable, which allows for reproducible data for identification.

    For many organisms, traditional phenotypic identification is problematic, takes a great amount of time and can result in subjective interpretation of the test results. Not all strains within a given species consistently exhibit a particular characteristic, thereby limiting phenotypic identification methods. Additionally, library databases utilized in support of phenotypic identification are limited.

  • Protein Coding Gene Sequencing with AccuGENX-ID® ProSeq

    Identification with ProSeq is a highly discriminatory and accurate sequence-based method that can be used to distinguish between very closely related microorganisms to the species level. Resolution is achieved by analyzing protein coding genes.

    If your AccuGENX-ID® report contains a species* confidence level, and we have determined the target gene that can distinguish between the different species in that group of organisms, you can request our identification with ProSeq service.
