Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Transgenic Animals
-
Are all genetically modified animals transgenic, and what is the difference?
Genetically engineered animal models are mutant animals whose genetic material has been modified through genetic engineering techniques, rather than a mutation that occurs naturally by mating and/or natural recombination.
Transgenic animals, specifically, are those that have had DNA from an external source inserted into their germ line, and it may or may not be targeted to a specific location in the genome. This is why the term "knockout animal" (where a targeted gene is made inoperative) or other more specific terms are often used when describing different types of genetically modified mutant animal models.
