Skin penetration studies provide information on the absorption of a test article into and across the skin. Knowing the rate and extent of absorption and skin distribution of a test article enables the generation of risk assessments. These data are also used to select lead formulations to undergo further toxicity testing or to be taken into the clinical setting. Our scientists conduct in vitro skin penetration studies on test articles and formulations from the cosmetic, agrochemical, biocidal, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.
Risk assessment studies are designed to comply with OECD Test Guideline No. 428 and follow relevant industry guidance. Our in vitro skin penetration experts use human and animal skin, where required. They have the flexibility to use either flow through (dynamic) or Franz (static) diffusion cells.
Charles River provides both in vitro (OECD 428) and in vivo (OECD 427) skin penetration assays. The results from the in vitro assays are used to build optimized in vivo study designs.
