Work at this level has a broad reach and tremendous impact, with results that ultimately improve the health and well-being of millions of people around the world. Our portfolio of products and services – from an expansive selection of research animal models to the management of genetically modified models and health surveillance – provides an important resource for principal investigators at academic and research institutions globally.
Most often, the conditions for which we seek a cause and a cure involve processes that can only be studied in life. Thus, animal models have long played a critical role in the development of new and more effective methods for diagnosing and treating disease. By mimicking the disease state in a living model, researchers are better able to investigate these processes and develop medical therapies to treat them.
For more than 60 years, Charles River has been a leading provider of research animal models. Today, scientists around the globe depend on our extensive portfolio of models to study disease in critical therapeutic areas. Our expertly managed network of vivaria and breeding facilities adheres to the strictest biosecurity measures, and has earned the seal of approval from the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International. Our commitment to genetic stability within our colonies ensures utmost model quality to achieve optimum study outcomes.
Our global sites proudly offer:
We work with customers across the globe on thousands of unique genetically engineered models to deliver study-ready cohorts to meet research needs. Our team of scientists, project managers, and animal care staff is able to offer guidance, develop work plans, and overcome challenges for working with unique models.
Clients who have chosen to outsource their colony management with us maintain a real-time connection to their projects with ICM™, an online portal to our custom-designed software platform for project and vivarium management. Tablet computers and RFID capture data and colony information on demand, providing instant visibility, communication with Charles River staff and control of all program activities.
As an industry-leading CRO, we are also able to provide integrated in-house drug discovery services for a seamless transition between research that employs these genetically engineered models and the further development of promising compounds.

Our 360 Diagnostics™ program is built upon a foundation of contamination prevention measures, effective pathogen detection, and scientific and technical proficiency. The cornerstone of this program is a diagnostic laboratory that provides sensitive and specific testing for animal facilities, research biologics, and a wide selection of research animal models (e.g., mice, rats, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, simian species).
Clients benefit from the added value of our sophisticated Laboratory Testing Management® (LTM™) portal, an online data management platform. LTM™ centralizes health, biomarker, and genetic testing programs in a single virtual location, delivering efficiencies from request to results.
Our 360 Diagnostics™ product and service offerings include:
The Charles River Accelerator and Development Lab (CRADL®) is our new option providing turnkey vivarium rental space in Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA. This centrally located laboratory allows clients to invest in their research projects instead of infrastructure, without compromising on the quality of their workspace or equipment. Managed by our skilled technicians, animals receive the best in care in secure, modern, compliant facilities. CRADL® is the optimum space for our clients to launch or expand their business, with the added benefit of access to Charles River’s complete portfolio of integrated drug discovery resources.
