New Study Reveals Data on Neurogenesis and Ageing
A new study published from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago has shed light on how neurogenesis may effect memory in ageing brains. In a post-mortem analysis of 38 brains from five cohorts, researchers found evidence of new neural growth in the brains of people with above average memory retention - also known as super-agers.
Researchers found evidence of new neurons at double or more the rate of normal healthy brains and those who demonstrated signs of dementia or Alzheimer's. They also studied the molecular network that controls neurogenesis, hoping to gain insight into how we develop new neurons in adulthood.
The researchers admit that the sample size is small, and more research is required. The brain is also difficult to sample, as samples from the same person can reveal different results.
