Advancing Research Alternatives

We’re partnering with MatTek to develop an in vitro alternative to inhalation toxicology studies

The Foundation for Chemistry Research and Initiatives (FCRI) recently awarded $1.3 million toward a multidisciplinary program with Charles River and MatTek Corporation to develop a New Approach Methodology (NAM) inhalation toxicology test to reduce reliance on traditional animal research models.

Advancing Alternatives Through Strategic Collaborations

This grant supports the American Chemistry Council’s Long-Range Research Initiative (ACC LRI)’s mission to stimulate chemical safety assessment innovation and marks an important step forward in in vitro inhalation toxicology studies.

By integrating MatTek’s advanced 3D human and rat tissue models into our toxicology and chemical testing workflows, we will bridge the gap between animal testing and human biology, allowing researchers to use screening assays for safety and efficacy testing of aerosol substances without the need of animal research models.

This alliance is a project guided by our Alternative Methods Advancement Project (AMAP), an initiative focused on reducing the number of research animals we work with.
