About Human Plasma Products

Human plasma functions to suspend and transport red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets throughout the body. It also contains important components such as water and salt, enzymes, antibodies, and clotting factors such as albumin and fibrinogen.

Human blood plasma is separated from peripheral blood by centrifugation. Peripheral blood is collected in our FDA-registered collection center following cGMP and cGTP collection guidelines from healthy human donors who have consented under an approved IRB protocol. All donors are tested for HBV, HCV, HIV, HTLV, WNV, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Syphilis.

Cryopreserved disease-state plasma samples are also available. Fresh plasma should be used immediately or refrigerated upon receipt. For cryopreserved plasma, storage at -80°C is acceptable.

Human Plasma in Research and Medicine

Human plasma and its components are used in the treatment and diagnosis of many serious diseases. The proteins and antibodies present in human plasma can be used to treat patients with chronic conditions such as hemophilia and autoimmune disorders. Convalescent plasma therapy is sometimes used as a stop-gap treatment for patients with an infectious disease for which there is no known treatment or for which treatment is unavailable. Convalescent plasma can also help researchers understand what immune cell subsets are most prevalent during an immune response and why.

Human blood plasma can be screened to detect the presence and prevalence of specific antibodies, such as those to COVID-19. Rising and falling antibody levels help doctors understand when immunization offers peak protection from viral infection, and whether booster shots are needed to maintain immunity.

In addition to playing a critical role in disease diagnosis and treatment, plasma infusion is often used to boost a patient’s blood volume during surgery or following traumatic blood loss, in order to prevent shock and to help with blood clotting.

We also offer the following high-quality, well-characterized disease state peripheral blood-derived products:

  • Leukopaks, Immune Cells, Whole Blood, Serum, and Plasma – collected in accordance with an IRB-approved protocol. Our disease state blood-derived products encompass a wide range of diseases.
