We Strive to Be the Difference

Charles River is committed to the ethical and humane treatment of animals in research. All CRADL™ facilities are led by a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) along with a team of experienced attending veterinarians at each location with a variety of backgrounds in industry and academia to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations. Every study conducted in our facilities and with our services is required to be approved by a Charles River Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC). Charles River strongly advocates for the replacement, reduction, and refinement (3Rs) of animal use in research.

In all Charles River CRADL™ facilities we offer animal care and compliance services in support of your in vivo science. Our welfare services are INCLUDED in your partnership with us in alignment with our shared values.

    • Animal ordering & receiving

Biosecurity is comprised of several elements, ranging from entry of animals into the facility, control, and disinfection of materials that come into contact with animals, and management of human-animal contact. The ultimate goal of the CRADL™ biosecurity program is to reduce or eliminate the potential of introducing an adventitious agent into your animal colonies. This comprehensive program incorporates the latest methodology and protocols to ensure constant management over the critical control points that are seen as areas which pose the highest risk to a facility.

Risk Mitigation

Personal Protective Equipment
Dedicated PPE and scrubs are required for staff who are working in the CRADL™ facility. Prior to entering the animal space, it is mandatory that both staff and clients wear disposable lab coats, gloves, and eye protection, which are all provided at no cost. As part of Charles River's environmental health and safety procedures, additional PPE may be required for certain studies. All PPE must be removed before exiting the facility. Staff and clients may not enter another facility for at least 24 hours prior to entering CRADL™.
Anthropods and Wild Animals
Pest Control
  • Daily: On-site, trained staff monitor pest traps.
  • Monthly: A professional pest control service provider monitors this critical control point.
Research Animals
CRADL™ maintains an approved animal vendor list enabling clients to bypass the quarantine process. Any animal sourced from non-approved vendors must be accompanied by a health report and are quarantined, tested, and cleared by a veternarian before being shipped to a CRADL™ facility.
Research Biologics
Research and Biologics Testing
Cell line research and biologics must be screened for rodent and human infectious agents and cleared for use by our on-staff veterinarian prior to use in your in vivo studies. Samples can be tested at our diagnostic laboratory using CLEAR (Cell Line Examination and Report) and PCR panels.
Feeding and Bedding
Sterilization (Feed and Bedding)
Bedding is irradiated prior to arrival at our facility. through our partnership with Innovive®, each irradiated cage arrives double-bagged and pre-filled with sterile bedding, allowing for a seamless transition onto a rack with minimal external exposure. All feed comes vacuum-sealed and irradiated. Upon arrival, each container is inspected to ensure its contents have not been compromised.
Sterilization (Water)
Sterilized water and irradiated water bottles are used for all animals. Clients may choose standard BPA-free Innovive® water bottles or amber non-filled water bottles (for use with light-sensitive compounds).
Caging and Equipment
Sterilization (Caging and Equipment)
CRADL™ utilizes single-use Innovive® caging systems made up of 100% PET plastics. They are BPA-free and recyclable. Cages are delivered double-bagged and irradiated for added biosecurity prior to use.
Dust and Droplets
Environmental Monitoring
The CRADL™ facility is monitored via two independent Building Automation Systems (BAS). One is linked to an external BS partner and the other is integrated into Charles River's corporate network. The redundant systems provide round-the-clock coverage for monitoring parameters such as temperature and humidity throughout the facility.
